We delight in the array of backyard birds that visit our squirrelproof feeder out our living room window here in town. Only the best seed from Wild Bird Chalet, and boy, does “cheep” travel fast! Refills nightly … though the freeze tested our resolve! The Regulars seem to have made it.

I’m glad your regular “customers” made it through the frigid weather. And a squirrel-proof feeder surely must be *gold*…I didn’t know there was such a thing!

Thank you so much for the shout-out & kind recommendation, Susan! Thanks too for the detailed update on your winter garden.

I have a zen attitude to bird feeders; basically, if you put one out, then the birds will eventually find it.

Isn't weather a complete bitch?

It's so sad when I think of the effort we all put into our gardens, but on the other hand, there's something hopeful about seasons and gardening. Gardeners and farmers are phlegmatic folk with a philosophical view of life and isn't it great that we can count ourselves within the tribe, plugging on regardless of weather being hot or cold.

In respect of birdfeeders, I look forward to hearing more of your experiments as I'm a complete newbie at feeding wild birds.

I too love the hopefulness of raising food. No matter what happens, whatever the weather throws at you, there’s always next season, next year. I agree, no matter how much or how little food we might be growing, we really are a tribe!

Beautiful, descriptive writing on this post. Very flowery and romantic (despite the losses to the cold!) What hope does a novice like me have when you have the "wilties" too? Alas, spring is around the corner!
